Robert Tavener, 1920 - 2004
Painter, illustrator and printmaker Robert Tavener was of that generation of lyrical English artists that followed Ravilious, Piper, Bawden and John and Paul Nash. He worked in various media, illustrating books, and undertaking memorable commissions for London Transport and the Radio Times, amongst others. It is perhaps as a printmaker that he is best known, with his vibrant, highly original lithographs, etchings, linocuts and screen prints. Watercolours by Tavener are far more rare. Robert Tavener was Head of Printmaking at Eastbourne School of Art, later becoming Vice-Principal.
